Bhubaneswar, July 12: The municipal corporation has decided to discontinue the Raahgiri celebrations from coming Sunday till the monsoon gets over.

The event, which is meant to promote non-motorised transport in the city, is organised in joint collaboration of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Bhubaneswar Development Authority, culture department and police.

Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena told The Telegraph that due to rains, it had been decided to suspend Raahgiri for sometime. "It is getting difficult for us as well as for the citizens to organise and attend the event due to the rain. Hence we have decided to discontinue it from coming Sunday," said Jena.

Similar problems had also cropped up during this summer when the city was sizzling.

However, the administration had then carried on with the event, though they had cut short its timing on a few Sundays.

Raahgiri, after being postponed for three times in December, had finally been held on January 17. Since then, the event has been observed on Janpath between Ram Mandir and Master Canteen squares till last Sunday.

Sources said that since the footfall of citizens to the event had decreased for the last few Sundays due to the rain, the civic body had decided to suspend it temporarily.

"We will hold a meeting after the monsoon and decide on when to restart the event," said a civic body official.
