The students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, showcased their hip-hop skills at an event organised at the students activity centre on their institute campus on Sunday. Atish Mohapatra known as B-boy Cirrus won the Seven to Smoke break dance category, Subrat Dash, aka B-boy Staryx, won the One on One break dance battle and Sourav Sharma, aka Souljax, won Seven to Smoke all style category. The event was hosted by the first emcee of Odisha, Amit Kerketta, popularly known in hip-hop arena as MIT. He stunned the audience with his rapping skills. Ashis Das, aka B-Boy Bainite, and Bishnudeo Tantubai (Mr X) judged the show. Partha Pradhan was the event manager and Ditchu Aditya was the co-ordinator while Aman Singh was the DJ. The students said they had organised the event to spread hip-hop culture among the youths as it talks about unity, peace, love and respect. They said hip-hop culture not only teaches them to be positive but also brings discipline into their lives and they derive absolute fun from it.

Workshop

A one-day workshop on team building was conducted by the Rourkela Institute of Management Studies (RIMS) on January 9. The workshop was conducted by Sukanya Ray of Suffolk University, USA. Students in large numbers showed keen interest in the inaugural session where the professor interacted with them. Another session was held for corporate delegates and faculties. Over 10 corporate officials had taken part in the second session. The workshop started at 10am and continued till 7pm.

Hostel seats

Research scholars of Sambalpur University are going to get hostel seats on the varsity campus shortly. The vice-chancellor of the university declared the good news on National Youth Day celebrations, which was held on the campus with great fanfare on Tuesday. The research scholars organised an event on the occasion. A meeting was also organised at the seminar hall of the sociology department of the university. Vice-chancellor of the university, C.R. Tripathy was the chief guest. He threw light on the life of Swami Vivekananda.

Youth fest

The two-day long Youth Fest 2015, organised by the Red Cross, was held at Khallikote Junior College on Sunday and Monday. More than 100 students from 15 different colleges in Odisha participated in the festival that culminated on National Youth Day, which is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Students spoke on Swamiji and his life and discussed about the great personality. Renowned psychologist Sudipta Panigrahi and Hrushikesh Panigrahi, the director of All India Radio, Berhampur, described Swami Vivekananda as the perfect icon for the younger generation. Bibekananda Panda, the principal of the college, and other lecturers addressed the students and stressed upon the need to have a constructive outlook that will help in shaping a better world.

Time management

All Odisha Lecturers’ Meet 2015 was held at the Astha School of Management, Bhubaneswar, on January 11. The event brought academics and leaders across the state on a common platform for achieving academic excellence and holistic development. The meet was marked by a seminar on a topic titled ‘Time Management for Effective Teaching: A Vision or an Illusion?’ and it was followed by an interactive session among the participants. More than 20 academics from 100 colleges participated in the event and shared their views and experiences about effective teaching and time management. Inspector-general of police, (operations) Soumendra Kumar Priyadarshi was the chief guest and he spoke about the urgency of time management and compared it with life management. Bikram Mohanty, the secretary of the college, and principal Sharmila Subramanian also spoke on the occasion. Subramanian briefed about an extensive survey done by the students of the institute on time management.

Convocation

The 12th annual convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, will be held on January 17 on the institute campus. Over 1,200 students from different disciplines such as B.Tech, M.Tech (regular), integrated M.Sc, M.Sc, MA, MBA, M.Tech (research) and Ph.D will receive their degrees on the occasion. Institute officials said nearly half of these students had consented to receive the degrees in person. Three distinguished alumnus will also receive the alumni award for their outstanding achievement in the field of management, technology and entrepreneurship. Besides, three honourary D.Sc degrees will also be awarded in the convocation. Sri Kumar Bannerjee, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Government of India, will be the chief guest and will deliver the convocation address. It will be presided over by Vasantha Ramaswamy, chairperson of the board of governors, NIT, Rourkela. Sunil Kumar Sarangi, the director of the institute, will present the annual report.

Alumni meet

An alumni meet was organised by the College of Basic Science and Humanities, Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), on January 9. More than 200 former students of the college gathered at the event. Jagadguru Shankaracharya addressed the present and former students, who had gathered on the campus and gave a spiritual discourse. In the evening, Odia film and television actor Mihir Das interacted with the students.

Several teachers were rewarded on this occasion. However, the Golden Jubilee celebrations that had been scheduled to be held on January 7 and 8 would be held on a new date later this month.
