Cuttack, Sept. 30: A three-member team of the railway safety board today began a probe into the train mishap at Kathajodi halt that left two persons dead and more than 25 injured yesterday.

The team today visited the accident spot and collected first-hand information from Government Railway Police (GRP) and other officials.

From October 3, East Coast Railway officials will also start recording statements of the injured and other eyewitnesses of the accident to conduct a detailed probe into the circumstances that led to the mishap.

Many of the accident victims and their families have demanded a detailed probe into how the accident occurred.

"I was sitting in the third coach. All of a sudden, there was a huge jerk and I fell down. Sometime later, I realised that I had fractured one leg. Other passengers helped me get up and rushed me to SCB Medical College and Hospital," said accident victim Ravi Shankar Singh.

"I was travelling in the third coach and lost my consciousness after the huge jerk. When I regained consciousness, I found myself lying on the floor of the bogie," said Manjulata Rout, another injured.

A doctor at SCB said that Singh was the only passenger who would have to undergo a major surgery for the leg fracture.

"Some 37 persons were admitted to the hospital, while 18 of them were released after primary treatment last night. At present, 17 persons are undergoing treatment here and the condition of all of them are stable," said SCB emergency officer B.N. Moharana.

The Bhubaneswar-Bhadrak passenger train had hit a stationary goods train at Kathajodi passenger halt around 6.30pm yesterday.

The deceased - Amulya Mohanty and Ranjit Das - were both working for the Government Railway Police, Bhubaneswar, as havildar and constable respectively.#

Official sources said that the accident occurred primarily due to the failure of the signalling system as the Bhubaneswar-Bhadrak passenger train was allowed on the same track on which the goods train was waiting for clearance.

"I had first rushed to the spot and recovered a body from the coach which was already damaged beyond recognition in the effect of the collision. I immediately informed the local Madhupatna police station," said Bibhuti Ray, a social activist.
