Sambalpur, May 18: Power disruption at the district headquarters hospital here is causing serious inconvenience to patients.

“The electricity supply has been disrupted for the past two days here. The fans are not working and the humidity is unbearable,” said Gobinda Swain, whose wife is admitted to the gynaecology ward. The attendants of several patients were seen wandering outside the ward at night because of power failure in the hospital. Some attendants of the patients were also seen sleeping on the verandah last night.

“My husband has been admitted here for the past eight days. The power went off last Friday. We have been having a very bad time since time,” said Sarjani Aind.

Hospital sources said there were two generators at the hospital. The wards were supplied being power by these generators for now. However, the attendant of a patient said even though generators were used last evening, the fans of the hospital did not work.

“As a result, the patients and their attendants had to spend a sleepless night,” he said. Hundreds of patients from the across the district depend on this government-run hospital.

Hospital manager Sudeep Dutta admitted that the patients were suffering because of power failure. “Transformer of the hospital burnt on Friday afternoon and that is the reason for this situation. We have informed Western Electricity Supply Company (Wesco). They removed the burnt transformer and installed a new one there. However, the new transformer is also burnt.”

“We are managing the situation with generators for now. The Wesco staff and the general electrical department are working to resolve the problem. We hope the problem will be resolved at the earliest,” he said.
