Cuttack: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday inaugurated the new building of the deputy commissioner of police here. The state-of-the-art building, equipped with all modern amenities and 24/7 power back-up, will cater to the infrastructure needs of the deputy commissioner of police, Cuttack.

The various units of the office of the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Cuttack, had been functioning from separate locations since the formation of the Police Commissionerate for the twin cities.

The District Intelligence Bureau and Human Rights Protection Cell of Cuttack Urban Police District, along with the DCP's office, were functioning from CB-9 Cantonment Road, while the establishment section, District Crime Records Bureau and the service records section operated out of the ground floor of the office of the inspector general of police (central range), Cuttack.

"The building, with a heritage look, is well equipped and all units of the DCP office will function from here," deputy commissioner of police, Cuttack, Akhileswar Singh said.

"Since all the units/sections will be functioning from under one roof, redress of public grievance will be better and easier," he said.

"Proper policing can also be ensured to render effective service to citizens," the senior police officer said.

Located adjacent to the Mahanadi Ring Road near the lower Bali yatra ground, the 24,500sqft, two-storey building has office space in the ground, first and second floors and was constructed by the Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation for Rs 7 crore.

Singh said the building had facilities for a hi-tech control room with Dial-100 response, conference hall, boardroom, lobby, reception, visitors' room and camp office of the police commissioner. "It also has facility for a modern CCTV surveillance system," he said.

An official source said the building had paved the way for the police to implement its plan to install CCTV cameras at strategic locations for wider surveillance.

Initially, the project was planned with cameras at eight important traffic junctions at Badambadi, Buxi Bazar, Chandi Chhak, Khannagar, Madhupatna, OMP Square, Ranihat and Sikharpur with control rooms at the respective nearest police stations.

Later, installation of cameras at the locations was planned by the police as part of wider surveillance to bring maximum areas under scanner. Accordingly, a central control room for the CCTV cameras has come up at the new headquarters from where the cops will monitor law and order in the city.
