Bhubaneswar, Feb. 6: A health university will be set up in the state on the lines of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology. The minister of health and family welfare Damodar Rout announced this here today.

The varsity will cover seven medical colleges and hospitals across the state, including the three existing government-run ones at Cuttack, Burla and Berhampur.

“It is necessary to establish the varsity for better management of the medical colleges. Once the chief minister accords approval to the plan, we will initiate steps to develop it,” said Rout.

The state government also held a detailed discussion for setting up a medical college in Chandpur area of Nayagarh district on public-private-partnership mode. The proposed facility will come up on the premises of a tuberculosis hospital run by Basant Manjari Swasthya Niwas (BMSW).

A private organisation — Blue Wheel National Health Care and Education Trust — will collaborate with the state government for this purpose, said sources.

According to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India, the state government will demarcate 20 acres out of the 117-acre property of BMSW. Besides, the bed strength of the tuberculosis hospital would be increased to 300. Sources said the state government was expected to allot the land and begin construction by next month. Admission for the first batch is likely to commence from the 2014 academic session.
