Though many were caught unawares, the thunder squall, which was accompanied with sporadic rain, brought a sigh of relief for Bhubaneswar residents. The city had been witnessing hot and humid weather condition from the past one week.
According to the regional meteorological centre here, the south-westerly wind from the southern side of the state and hot and dry wind from the northern side collided with each other and developed into a thunder squall.
The centre has recorded 3mm of rain in the city till 5pm on Thursday, while the wind speed was around 20kmph. The mercury also dropped by two to three degrees.
“The south-westerly wind brought moisture in the atmosphere, while the humidity and the increased day temperature added to the weather condition. A cyclonic circulation lies over the northern parts of the state and it has been contributing to conditions that is developing into thunder squall at several pockets since the past few days,” said Met director Sarat Chandra Sahu.
“It was a pleasant weather condition in the afternoon when the sky was covered with black and thunderous clouds. The breeze was cool and the drizzle was the best thing to happen to the atmosphere,” said Kharavela Nagar resident Chinmayi Raiguru.
