Bhubaneswar, April 10: A 38-year-old man undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the hospital's medicine ward situated on the sixth floor of the building here this afternoon.

The authorities have constituted a fact-finding team to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.

Hospital sources the deceased, Subash Jena, a resident of Dhenkanal district, was admitted on April 6.

"He was a psychiatric patient and was brought to AIIMS for treatment of drug overdose. He was first treated in the casualty ward and later shifted to the medicine ward," said a doctor of the hospital.

The patient allegedly jumped to his death from the medicine ward around 3.45pm today.

"I had been to the ground floor to refill water bottles and when I reached the ward he was not in his bed. When we were searching for him, we found him lying in a pool of blood on the hospital premises," said his attendant. Around 20 other patients were also present in the ward when the incident took place.

However, the incident has also baffled the hospital authorities as they have been locking all the windows and exit points of various wards to prevent theft cases.

"As construction activity is on at the hospital, we noticed a series of thefts taking place and we decided to lock the windows and exit points of various wards. We are yet to ascertain the exact spot from where he allegedly jumped off," said a hospital official.

Later police reached the spot and seized the body of the deceased. The police said that there were multiple injuries on Jena's body.

"The body will be sent for post-mortem and we have registered a case of unnatural death. We have also informed his family members who will reach Bhubaneswar tonight," said inspector in-charge of Khandagiri police station Himanshu Bhusan Swain.

Sources at the hospital said that it was being suspected that the patient had slipped through one of the open windows in the ward and reached the balcony from where he jumped off.

Superintendent of AIIMS Dilip Parida said that the fact-finding team would ascertain the circumstances that led to the patient leaping to death at the hospital.

As most floors of the hospital have security guards, it is difficult to ascertain how Jena managed to give them the slip.

Parida said a security officer was included in the team to probe that angle.

"The team will submit its report in 48 hours. It has been asked to suggest measures necessary to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. This is an unfortunate incident and we have provided all documents related to his treatment to the police," said Parida.
