Orissa tableau “Jayadev” and “Gitagovinda” on display during the full dress rehearsal for Republic Day at Rajpath in New Delhi on Sunday. In the pageantry, a scene of Oriya poet Jayadev composing the Gitagovinda would lead the procession, with a miniature Jagannath Temple being drawn behind it. The temple scene would have various activities taking place in its precincts with recitation of and performance on songs from Gitagovinda. Episodes from the manuscript have been painted in the traditional pattachitra style on both sides of the tableau, which has been designed by Oriya artist Biranchi Prasad Sahu. Artistes from the state are busy lending the final touches to this presentation. The classical Sanskrit literature Gitagovinda written by Oriya saint Jayadev depicts the rich literary and cultural heritage of the state, and has a great influence on music, dance, art and architecture both within and outside the state. The manuscript is said to have a key role in spreading the Bhakti cult in the country. Telegraph picture |
