4 held in jail attack

Paradip: The disciplinary measures to segregate some unruly under-trial prisoners from the cell of a jail near Jagatsinghpur led to the Friday’s murderous attack on jail warder Debendra Swain, police said on Tuesday. Swain, warder of Alipingal sub-jail was critically injured after a gang of motorcycle-borne anti-socials barged into his house and shot at him on Friday night. Swain had to be admitted to the intensive care unit of Cuttack-based S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital, where he is still battling for life.

Office gherao

Bhubaneswar: Activists of the Sambalpur Sangram Samiti on Tuesday gheraoed the office of the revenue divisional commissioner (northern division) here. They demanded a permanent revenue divisional commissioner in Sambalpur. The commissioner of central division has been put in additional charge of Sambalpur division for the last fifteen months. But the government has not taken any steps to appoint a permanent commissioner in Sambalpur,” rued Jayasankar Mishra, a member of the Sambalpur Sangram Samiti.

Cesu raid

Bhubaneswar: The Central Electricity Supply Utility on Tuesday raided the Bajaranga Bali Alloys located at Manguli Chaka in Cuttack and found it involved in power theft by using the remote meter tampering system. The iron rod making industry is owned by Dinesh Agarawal and consumes monthly electricity amounting more than six lakh rupees, said a Cesu official. An FIR was lodged about this at Cuttack Energy police station. The company was fined with penal bill for one year in double the rate of the tariff, totalling around Rs 2.5 crores. Power supply to the company was disconnected and manager of the firm was arrested.

Teacher flak

Bhubaneswar: Headmaster of the Puri Bramhagiri Nilakantha School was on Tuesday suspended by the school and mass education department following allegation of molestation of a Class VI student. The headmaster, Braja Kishore Pradhan, had tried to molest the student after the school hours. The student had informed the matter to her parents following which they lodged a complaint at the school and mass education department's grievance cell.
