Official accused of blocking food supply

Bhubaneswar: Around 100 residents of Gopabandhu Leprosy Colony in Buddha Nagar area on Wednesday gheraoed the office of the child development project officer (CDPO) at BJB Nagar. They accused the CDPO of blocking the supply of rice and dal to the Anganwadi in the colony. Residents of the colony, most of whom are leprosy patients, sat in front of the CDPO office and later tried to enter the office forcefully. A tussle ensued between them and the staff of the office. Later, the Badagad police pacified the protestors.

Property expo

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar is fast emerging as a potential real estate business centre following heavy investment in industrial and other sectors, said housing and urban development secretary Sourav Garg addressing the concluding session of the four-day Property Expo-11. “Leading players in the real estate business should explore opportunities in second class cities in the state by developing them with their expertise in infrastructure,” Garg said. Developers of the state should join hands with the government in private public partnerships to provide shelter for the common people.

Rare honour

BHUBANESWAR: The Sangeet Natak Akademi award for Odissi dance, the highest honour for classical dance forms in the country, will be awarded to danseuse Aruna Mohanty this year. The announcement was made at the Sangeet Natak Akademi in New Delhi on Wednesday. A disciple of the late Gangadhar Pradhan, Mohanty currently manages the Orissa Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar and is known for her innovative choreography.

Tehsil building

Bhubaneswar: A newly-constructed tehsil building was inaugurated by governor M.C. Bhandare at Bhandaripokhari in Bhadrak. Bhandare also distributed Madhu Babu pension to the beneficiaries. He also inaugurated stalls on the premises of the tehsil office and interacted with members of self-help groups.

Graft case

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths on Wednesday registered a case against ex-junior engineer of Bhapur in Nayagarh Subash Chandra Tripathy and contractor Shyamghan Das of village Moradabadi in Fategad. They were charged with misappropriation of funds amounting to Rs 5.53 lakh and for showing undue favour to the contractor.

Posco rally

BHUBANESWAR: The Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti held a rally at Paradip demanding arrest and legal action against “guilty” administrative officers and withdrawal of “false” cases against the Samiti. The activists handed over a memorandum addressed to the governor through Erasama tehsildar, Jiban Mallick.
