Freedom fighter breathes his last

bhubaneswar: Freedom fighter and Kendriya Sahitya Acadamy award winner Chittaranjan Das breathed his last on Sunday. He was 88 and had been down with old age related ailments for quite some time. Das was admired by his readers as a renowned creative talent. He was exceptional in his essays, travel literature and in the field of translation and has vast command over foreign languages. Sahitya Academy had awarded him in 1960, and he was given the Sarala Award in 1989. .

Protest

Bhubaneswar: Protests were held at Puri and Rourkela against the demolition of the Shiv Shakti Jagannath Temple at New Delhi. Calling it a matter of 'shame', members from different sections of society gathered to shout slogans and voice their protest against the incident. The Central Public Works Department had bulldozed the place of worship at Pushpa Vihar in south Delhi, constructed 35 years ago. .

Woman killed

BHUBANESWAR: An elderly tribal woman was hacked to death by her nephew at Bazarguda village in Mayurbhanj district on Sunday. The youth reportedly suspected her to be performing witchcraft, police said. The nephew allegedly beheaded Phulamani Hansda with an axe. Residents of a nearby village handed him over to police.

Road fury

Berhampur: Angry locals resorted to roadblock for over two hours following the death of a woman after being run over by a speeding vehicle at Kukudakhandi on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Jhunu Jene (37).The vehicle hit Jhuni while she was walking on the road. The blockade was lifted after Sadar police intervened.

Fest ends

Bhubaneswar: The week-long 20th south Orissa drama festival concluded at Berhampur. The festival was organised by Ganjam Zilla Mancha Kalakar Sammilani, an organisation of amateur theatre activists. The festival aims at promoting theatre in rural areas of south Orissa.

Suicide

BHUBANESWAR: A couple allegedly killed themselves at Bhanjanagar in Ganjam on Sunday. The suicide appears to have taken place following some family dispute, police said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. A case of unnatural death has been lodged.

Tribal festival

BHUBANESWAR: The state-level tribal festival Parab 2011 was inaugurated by state information technology minister Ramesh Majhi at Koraput on Sunday. The festival of indigenous people of Koraput has been organised by district council of culture, Koraput since 1996. It aims to spot hidden talents in the field of art, culture and sports.
