Bail denial for duo

Bhubaneswar: Orissa High Court on Thursday refused to grant bail to two of the prime accused persons in the Kandhamal nun gang rape case. The single-judge bench of Justice C.R. Dash rejected the bail petitions of Gajendra Digal and Santosh Patnaik, who were among the 10 accused facing trial before the court of district and sessions judge, Cuttack. Both the accused persons, lodged at Choudwar jail, were allegedly part of the mob during the incident at the pastoral centre in Nuagaon on August 25, 2008. The other eight accused had been granted bail.

Chopper snag

Cuttack: A major mishap was averted on Thursday as a Coast Guard helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in paddy fields on the outskirts of Cuttack following a technical snag. “The pilot and others aboard are safe,” said Coast Guard DIG, K.P.S. Raghuvanshi. The helicopter made the landing around 1pm near Dhanharapara under the Cuttack Sadar police station limits. It took off again around 6.20pm following repairs.

Dharna

Keonjhar:Local residents are staging an indefinite dharna at Narayanpur railway station demanding the immediate introduction of a fast passenger train between Bhubaneswar and Keonjhar. The people alleged that despite the Centre's proposal for a fast passenger train between Keonjhar and Bhubaneswar in the current budget, no steps have been taken so far. “We had resorted to agitation last year. The government agreed to provide a fast passenger train. So far, no train has been arranged,” said Ramesh Sahoo a local resident.

Maoist arrest

Bhubaneswar: Kandhamal police on Thursday arrested a Maoist from G. Udayagiri. The arrested Tuna Pradhan was an active member of the Ghumushar division of CPI (Maoist). Combing operation by the security forces was intensified in the wake of the arrest of Pradhan.

Man attacked

Bhubaneswar: One Sushant Biswal, 30, sustained injuries when two persons attacked him near Tapoban High School in Khandagiri on Wednesday night while he was going towards Ghatikia. The injured, who was soon rushed to Capital Hospital by the police, said the goons asked for his mobile phone. When he did not give in, they attacked him. Sushant was going to his sister's house around 8pm when the incident happened. Sources said that his condition was stable after he was shifted to a private hospital late in the night. The Khandagiri police have begun a manhunt to arrest the culprits.

MCL plan

Bhubaneswar: Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) would provide the entire coal required for its power plant at Sundargarh from its Basundhara Coalfield. The power plant would have a capacity of 1,600 mega watt. The proposed project would be set up through a special purpose vehicle.
