Trader shot at, injured

Berhampur: Unidentified persons shot at a businessman in Kabisurya Nagar around 7.30am on Sunday. The victim, Om Ram, 45, was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. Ram, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, has been running a small aluminium utensils factory for the past eight years here. The culprits, who came to the spot on motorcycles, fired five rounds on Ram. He sustained three bullet injuries on his hand and one each in his stomach and waist. Police found five empty cartridges and one live cartridge from the spot. Police suspects family feud as the reason behind the attack. An FIR has been lodged by the family of the victim.

7 missing

Bhubaneswar: Seven persons went missing after a country boat capsized in Kolab reservoir of Koraput on Sunday. The boat, carrying 12 people from Pujariput village under Lamtaput block, was on its way to Jolahonjar, when it overturned and capsized. While five girls swam to safety, seven others including two children and the boatman were reported to be missing.

Suspension

Angul: Former Angul tehsildar Ramachandra Jena has been placed under suspension by the state revenue department for illegally awarding pattas to some influential persons of the town. District collector D.V. Swamy had earlier formed an official committee to probe the matter. The committee found gross irregularities in land transfer. The collector, besides suspending two junior revenue officials, recommended to the government for action against the tehsildar.

Tortured

Balasore: A case has been registered against a roadside restaurant owner and one of his associates for allegedly torturing a minor tribal boy of Nilgiri. The thirteen-year-old was allegedly singed with cigarette butts, given electric shocks and dealt with blows by the duo, who accused him in a theft case.

Crafts fair

Bhubaneswar: The two-month long state-level Handicrafts and Handloom Exhibition has begun in Puri. Industries minister Raghunath Mohanty inaugurated the fair at Puri Nilachal Urban Haat. Around 200 artisans and weavers would participate in the fair. Besides regular cultural programmes, food stalls and a children’s play area have also been set up there.

Suicide bid

Bhubaneswar: A young couple from Christianpeta area of Jeypore attempted suicide on Sunday after their parents refused to marry them. The duo, identified as Suman and Titu Nayak, both in their twenties, apparently consumed chloroform to end their lives. While Suman died, Nayak is struggling for his life at the district hospital. Suman’s family has filed an FIR against Titu.
