Teachers in bribe net

Bhubaneswar: Three persons, including a headmaster and a teacher, were arrested by vigilance sleuths on Monday for demanding illegal gratification to show favour to a candidate of the matric supplementary examination. Headmaster Goura Chandra Sahu, assistant teacher Boinda Pradeep Kumar Pradhan and peon Dhruba Charan Pradhan of Ram Deo High School have been arrested and forwarded to court. The trio had demanded Rs 1,000 from the complainant, Trinath Kumar Behera, brother of the candidate. A trap was laid and the bribe money was recovered from under the tablecloth of the headmasters table.

Trawlers sink

Balasore: Two fishing trawlers, based off Balramgadi capsised on Sunday night near the confluence of the Budhabalanga river and the sea. The incident took place owing to the rough weather conditions. However, the crew members of the trawlers had escaped unhurt, said Pradipta Mahapatra, an adviser of the Balaramgadi Trawlers’ Association.

Revenue meet

Bhubaneswar: A high-level meeting under the chairmanship of chief secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik was held to discuss the state government’s measures for the revenue enhancement to meet the demand for increasing capital outlay for ensuring the twelfth plan and other developmental activities. Finance secretary Jugal Mohapatra presented the report of the expert committee on revenue enhancement measures that included various recommendations in terms of administrative recognition, change in legal institutional framework and policy design.

Four detained

Balasore: The marine police of Balasore on Monday intercepted a intruding vessel and apprehended four crew members near Balaramgadi during a joint coastal security exercise. “The vessel was intercepted by our team during the mock drill. The intruders after coming by a ship were approaching the coast by a fishing boat,” said Kailash Chandra Parida, sub-divisional police officer.

NSC concludes

Rourkela: The two-day National Student Convention (NSC - 2011) by the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, as a part of its golden jubilee celebration concluded on Monday. Prof. S.K. Sarangi, director of the institute, presided over the function. Competitions in research paper presentation, Megacorp, robotics, grand discussion, street plays, instrumental competitions, singing, rangoli, dance, film quiz marked the event. Individual and team competitions of sports in kabbadi, football, table tennis, swimming and sports quiz were also held.
