Vedanta report sought

Bhubaneswar: The environment and forests department of the state government has issued a showcause notice to Vedanta Alumina for the violation of environment norms of its red mud pond. According to local residents, the red mud pond is creating an environmental hazard in the region. Amnesty International, in a report, has also alleged that toxic residues have been found in the pond deposit and nearby areas. However, senior officials of the plant denied the allegations saying that the red mud pond was creating no environmental threat for the surrounding areas.

CBSE results

Bhubaneswar: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) would declare the Class X examination results for Bhubaneswar and Guwahati regions at 10 am on Saturday. The results would be available on the website www.cbse.nic.in.

Complaint

Keonjhar: An FIR has been lodged against independent MLA Jitu Patnaik and two of his personal security officers (PSOs) with Joda police for allegedly assaulting a motorcyclist. According to the complaint lodged by Ramesh Chandra Nayak, 35, of Gobindapur village, the incident took place near Bileipada on NH-215 on Wednesday night while he was on his way to the local market on a motorcycle. On the way, he was hit by the vehicle in which the Champua MLA and two of his PSOs were travelling and he fell on the road. Instead of taking him to the hospital, the trio physically assaulted him. Charges under sections 341, 323, 294, 279, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code were levelled against Patnaik and his PSOs, he said. They fled from the scene leaving him injured, officer in-charge of the local police station Gopabandhu Acharya said quoting the FIR. Earlier, a case was registered against him at Bamebari police station by a tribal woman accusing him of assault and molestation.

Survey

Bhubaneswar: The Centre has requested the French government to provide a digitised copy of an old document on scientific survey of plans of Orissa that is present in a Paris museum. In a letter to the French ambassador Jerome Bonnafont, Union minister of environment and forests Jairam Ramesh said: “I have been told that the oldest written document based on scientific survey of plans of Orissa was written in 1725 by a Frenchman called Nicolas L. Empereure. ”

Book release

Bhubaneswar: The Grass Flower, a collection of 64 poems by poet and Rajya Sabha director Ramakanta Das, was released recently by former president of India, APJ Abdul Kalam at his residence in New Delhi. P.G. Rama Rao, retired professor of English and American literature at Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, has written the foreword of the book, published by Kerala-based Paridhi Publications. Das, who hails from Kendrapara district, is a postgraduate in English from Ravenshaw University, Cuttack.
