Couple, son commit suicide in Keonjhar
Keonjhar: An elderly couple and their only son on Thursday committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Kalikaprasad village under Champua police station limits in this district. Police said the family took this drastic step after being unable to repay the loan of about Rs 10 lakh they had taken from moneylenders. The incident came to light after one of their neighbours found them lying dead. A suicide note recovered from the house stated that they had committed suicide as they could not repay the loan incurred from different moneylenders. The deceased were identified as Ghasinath Nayak (62),Pala Nayak (58) and their son Amar alias Jatia Nayak (36). According to police, the family had been living at Kalikaprasad for many years. Jatia used to run his family by doing business. Bhubaneswar: The State Human Rights Commission on Thursday awarded compensation in a police encounter case of two civilians of Gajapati district. The encounter, which took place in November 2008, had left a villager dead and another injured. On November 22, 2008, when two villagers Junesh Gada Raita and Karnal Gada Raita of Khutuniganda village under Adaba police station in Gajapati district were looking for their lost cattle, the police fired at them misunderstanding them as naxals. While Junesh succumbed to the bullet injuries immediately, Karnal was badly injured. our cattle were also left dead in the firing. The inquiry led to announcement of a compensation of Rs 3 lakh for Junesh's family and Rs 1.2 lakh for Karnal Gada Raita. The commission also awarded a compensation of Rs 25,000 each for death of the four cattle. Bhubaneswar: The city police on Thursday arrested a person for allegedly injuring a Class X student of a public school by attacking her with a dagger on February 21 evening. The accused, identified as Santosh from Dhenkanal district, was arrested from Maharastra, informed a police source. The girl has been nursing her injuries in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. She had sustained injuries on her cheek, hand and back. Bhubaneswar: At least 20 persons were arrested at Kandhamal on Thursday after they tried to protest by waving black flags during chief minsister Naveen Patnaiks' visit to Kandhamal. The chief minister was in the district to inaugurate various developmental projects. Bhubaneswar: To effectively combat the Naxal menace in the state, a two-day workshop on 'Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and other relevant offences' in the context of Left-wing extremism kicked off at the state crime branch on Thursday. Senior police officers of the ranks of additional superintendent (ASP), deputy superintendent (DSP) from the naxal affected districts as well as the crime branch, besides CID officers and forensic and bomb experts participated in the workshop.
