BJD threatens ‘economic blockade’

Bhubaneswar: Members of the Biju Janata Dal Rourkela unit on Monday threatened to launch an “economic blockade” from January 26 if their demand for over-all improvement of railway services and the railway station were not met. he members on Monday submitted a memorandum to the railway minister through the additional district magistrate with the demands. They also demanded regularisation of the night train services.

Tribal gherao

BHUBANESWAR: Thousands of tribals on Monday gheraoed the district magistrate’s office in Rayagada demanding a high-level probe into the case of the missing former councillor Bhagirathi Mandangi. he tribals said they had no trust in the district police and demanded a crime branch inquiry into the matter. Mandangi had gone missing on December 15.

Vehicle ban

BHUBANESWAR: Police banned the plying of heavy vehicles from the Khurda Pitapalli square to Bhubaneswar during day hours from Monday. Heavy vehicles would not be allowed to move between 7am and 8pm . This has been done to ease traffic congestion in the state capital.

Hunger strike

Bhubaneswar: About 50 heath workers on Monday launched a hunger strike before the chief district medical officer's office in Balasore demanding recruitment. he youths alleged that they had appeared the recruitment drive launched by the district administration but were later informed that they were disqualified for no valid reason.

Jawan killed

Bhubaneswar: A jawan accidentally shot himself on Monday while cleaning his gun at Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) barrack in Redhakhol. lthough he was rushed to the to VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla, he succumbed to his injuries. The deceased jawan has been identified as Binod Tirkey. irkey was cleaning his gun, when a bullet “misfired” and hit his face.

Tennis tourney

BHUBANESWAR: The All India Tennis Association talent series 2011 for under 14 and under 16 boys and girls began at Rourkela on Monday. DIG Y.K. Jethwa inaugurated the tournament. At least 27 boys and 15 girls from six different states across the country are participating in the event being held at the P.T. Usha Sport Complex. The tournament will conclude on January 7.

King dead

BHUBANESWAR: Patiyagarh king Krishna Chandra Deo breathed his last on Monday after prolonged illness.
