New session and job glory

The admission process in all degree colleges is drawing to a close with the second round getting over on July 12. The list for SC/ST extension seats was published on July 18 and the admissions were conducted on July 20. Now, all eyes would be on the list for balance seats to be out on July 23 after which registration has to be done between 10am and 2pm on July 23. On the same day, a merit list would be published in the notice board of colleges where seats are lying vacant and admission would be conducted on July 26 from 10am to 5pm. If there more number of seats are to be filled up, another 'vacant seat' admission would be held from July 28 to August 3, including Sundays and public holidays. For degree college admissions, 74,968 application forms were submitted against a sanctioned strength of 57,312 seats in all 162 colleges across the state. As per the first selection list, 48,019 candidates had been intimated out of which only 37,114 took admission. During the second round, 7,036 candidates took admission. Overall, 44,150 students have already been admitted and 13,162 seats are still lying vacant. Classes for freshers in all degree colleges would start from July 27. On the other hand, there has been a change in schedule for Plus Two admission. The date of announcement of first selection merit list, which was earlier July 22, has been shifted to July 26. Accordingly, the admission would take place between August 1 and 5. The second selection list would be out on August 11 and, accordingly, admission would be done on August 16 and 17. The dates for subsequent admission are available on www.dheorissa.in. This year, 2,71,298 students have applied against 3,05,356 seats available in 1,282 junior colleges, including self-financing institutions. Classes for first year students are slated to begin from August 23.

Recruitment record

The fourth batch students of the Asian School of Business Management (ASBM), Bhubaneswar, and first branch students of its branch in Hyderabad have set a brilliant record in campus recruitment drive this year as they received 327 offers from 80 companies. The corporate houses and other leading organisations that have hired the ASBM students are Deloitte, Shriram Transport Finance Company Ltd, KIPS Publishing World, Liliput, ABC India, Motilal Oswal Securities, HDGC Standard Life, OCL India, ITC, AC Nielsen, IBM, Google, Gati, Future Value Retail, Lanco, State Bank of Hyderabad, SBI Life, ITC Wills Lifestyle, Fact set, Core Logic, Visa Steel, Vodafone Essar, PHI (India), TATA Sponge Iron, SBI, Shoppers' Stop, Ceasefire, Reliance Retail, HDFC Bank, Dena Bank, Allahabad Bank, Star Union Dai-Ichi, Federal Bank, Capital IQ, IOB, Coast liners, Australian Bio-Care, SRB Consultancy, Gati Academy, Acculogix, Geojit BNP, Future Generali, Metlife India, Thyrocare Technologies, Religare and Bajaj Capital among others. Basking in the glory, group director of ASBM, Biswajeet Pattanayak said the joining of students from previous batches of ASBM in renowned business houses and other sunrise sectors have strengthened the level of confidence of the present students.

Art exhibition

An art exhibition was organised by Kala Kshetra, an art and crafts college in Balasore, on July 16. Around 30 paintings (acrylic, water colours, oil colours, mixed media) made by students were put up for display. Vice-chancellor of Bhubaneswar-based Utkal University of Culture, Amiya Kumar Pattanayak inaugurated the exhibition at Kala Kshetra. He studied each of the paintings and appreciated the colourful and imaginative creations. He also encouraged the students and offered tips by talking about eminent artists across the globe. Pattanayak interacted with the management committee regarding the achievements of students, plans and prospects of the private institution. 'This was his first visit to the district after becoming the VC of Utkal University of Culture. We are grateful that he liked the exhibition and the campus infrastructure. He has assured us that he would recommend the government either to take over our college or provide financial assistance,' principal, Nikunja Bihari Das said.

Poor response

An audio-visual online seminar on 'Disaster Management' was held at the Edusat Hall of Orissa Space Application Center (ORSAC) on July 13. While invitations were sent to all premier colleges in the capital, only two students from BJB (Autonomous) College, Bhubaneswar turned up for the seminar. Besides the two, one resource person from ORSAC was present. The interaction on the emerging topic of disaster management was done through a video-conferencing of sorts where hardly 12 to 15 students and resource persons in major cities of the country participated. It was presided over by Sujatha Satpathy, assistant professor, National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), ministry of home affairs, New Delhi. In recent times, hydro-meteorological disasters have been on the rise. Moreover, Asia has borne the maximum impact due to several disasters in the last decade. During the seminar, a Powerpoint presentation was done highlighting the major disaster threats in the country and the precautionary steps that need to be taken. It was followed by an online question-answer session.
