Bhubaneswar: Suspected gangsters fired bullets at Baba Gopal Chandra Das in Abhiram Paramahansa Shanti Anandaashram near Puri on the wee hours of Tuesday. Around 3.15am, bullets were fired through the window of an ashram in which Das was residing. He has received seven bullet injuries and was admitted to the district headquarters hospital. “His condition is slated to be out of danger,” said a police officer. The ashram inmates alleged that Baba had received threatening calls from some local residents. A land dispute involving the ashram was also suspected as one of the reasons behind the attack. Police are yet to arrest any culprit involved in the attack. Bhubaneswar: The local CBI court on Wednesday sentenced a clerk of the assistant labour commissioner’s office at Sector V, Rourkela, to one and a half year’s rigorous imprisonment and Rs 5,500 fine on charges of taking bribe from a retired employee of a private company in 2006. The clerk, identified as Mahendra Maharana, was trapped by CBI officials on March 22, 2006 while accepting bribe of Rs 2,000 from the complainant Basudev Mohanty. Maharana had demanded money to process the file regarding Mohanty’s gratuity money. Bhubaneswar: Maoist leader Ganti Prasadam will be brought to the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Koraput on Thursday for the hearing of an earlier case. The extremist leader will have to be brought from the Ongole Jail in Andhra Pradesh for the hearing. Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) authorities have brought about major changes in some trains starting from Orissa from July 1. As per the new arrangement while Puri-Howrah Duronto Express will leave Puri at 6.30am, Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Duronto Express will leave the capital at 8.10am. Likewise, Puri-Haridwar Utkal Express will leave Puri at 9pm and Puri-Jodhpur Express will leave Puri at 1.30pm and Puri-Rourkela Passenger will leave Puri at 3.30am. Chennai-Howrah Mail will leave Bhadrak at 11. 30pm. Bhubaneswar: The two-day conference of chief district medical officers (CDMOs) started here on Wednesday with onset of the monsoon season. Inaugurating the meet, health and family welfare minister Prasanna Acharya stressed on eradication and cure of diarrhoea, malaria and other water-borne ailments. As the state government has already issued directives and guidelines on managing these seasonal diseases, Acharya sought to know from the CDMOs what steps were being taken. There should not be any complaints from the patients at the primary health centers across the state as the health department has already dispatched plenty of medicines to all the health-care delivery institutions,” he added.
