Foiled loot bid in bank

Cuttack: A youth made an unsuccessful bid to snatch away Rs 4,000 from a person inside a private bank. The incident has raised questions on availability of the security measures in various private banks in the city. The goon, however, managed to escape after the man had raised an alarm. he police said one goon tried to loot cash from a customer, who had come to deposit money at the HDFC bank on Bajrakabati road at around 12:30pm on Wednesday. n eyewitness said the incident had happened on the bank premises in the presence of security guards and other customers. The people present inside the bank, however, made a vain attempt to catch the goon.

Tourist dead

Bhubaneswar: One tourist died while three others were rescued by lifeguards from the Puri beach on Wednesday. The four tourists from Dumdum, Calcutta, were bathing in the sea when they drowned after being swept away by a high tide. Though lifeguards rescued them, one was declared dead at the Puri district headquarters hospital.

Five kidnapped

Bhubaneswar: Five people of Poteru village in Malkangiri district have allegedly been kidnapped by Maoists on Wednesday. One of them, Bandan Subba, who was earlier a Maoist, who had surrendered sometime ago. According to villagers, at least 50 Maoists had entered the SP’s house and ransacked and stolen goats from another villager’s house before kidnapping the five people.

Theft

Bhubaneswar: Two motorcycle-borne youths snatched Rs 98,000 from the employee of a private coaching centre in the Saheed Nagar in broad daylight on Wednesday.The victim, Ganesh Kumar, an accountant of the coaching centre, along with another employee, Kali Charan Samal, had gone to draw money from a private bank at Sriya Square in Kharavela Nagar area. While they were parking the vehicle in front of the coaching centre at around 3.30 pm after returning from the bank, two youths on a motorcycle snatched away the bag containing the money from Ganesh.

Jumbo training

Bhubaneswar: Training of wild elephant Shankar, who had recently killed one person, has resumed in Kumarkhunti. The elephant had been kept in chains after the killing and its training at Satkosia had been disrupted. It is now being trained to be a kumki along with elephants Jasoda, Nadan and Rajkumar under mahaouts from Assam.

Murder probe

Bhubaneswar:A petition was filed in the high court seeking CBI inquiry into the murder case of Hindol block chairman Nabaghan Sahoo. arlier, local political outfits also held several demonstrations, demanding a probe by the central agency. They said that Sahoo was murdered for a political motive.
