Bhubaneswar, April 1: More than a year has passed since the announcement of university status to the Ramadevi Women's College. But, no official communication from the state government has reached the college authorities in this regard.
Except for some announcements made by the higher education department of the state government from time to time, the college authorities get to know about the new status through media reports.
The developments have upset the teachers of the college.
The announcement to grant varsity status to the college was first made in November 2013 at a state government organised workshop on Rashtriya Uchhatar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA).
Subsequently the Union HRD ministry had accepted the proposal of the state government to confer university status to the college under the RUSA scheme, paving its way to become the first women's university in the state.
"Getting it upgraded into a varsity involves massive work and it needs to begin soon. Unfortunately, we cannot begin anything unless we get an order from the higher education department," said Chitrangada Samantsinghar, the college principal.
The principal said the college was busy implementing the choice based credit system (CBCS) that would be implemented in the colleges from the 2015-16 academic session.
"We will then approach the state government or wait for their direction and act accordingly," Samantsinghar said.
The elated bunch of students, who had met chief minister Naveen Patnaik after the varsity status announcement, has also expressed their displeasure.
"We were very happy after the announcement, but it is unfortunate that nothing much has been done after that. It is disheartening that no official communication regarding this has been made to the college. It seems we cannot see this materialise before we leave the college," said Soumya Shree, a degree student.
"The proposal that we submitted under RUSA includes infrastructure improvement, creation of centres of excellence, faculty appointment, library automation and e-governance," said Samantasinghar.
She also said: "Our immediate requirements are good labs and high end equipment. We also need more number of rooms and an advanced library."
Officials in the college said the infrastructure and faculty requirements would grow by many times if postgraduate departments were opened in the college.
At present, Ramadevi Women's College has postgraduate courses only in Hindi and home science.
