Cuttack, Sept. 1: One person was critically injured when crude bombs exploded on the premises of an upper primary school at Bamphi Sahu under Purighat police limits here today.

Police said one live crude bomb and other raw materials to make explosives had been seized from the spot.

The injured, identified as Narayan Saha, has suffered injuries on his face and eyes and is being treated at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

The incident occurred around 3.30pm. Narayan and two others were manufacturing the crude bombs on the terrace of a single-storey structure adjacent to the main school building when a few of those went off accidentally.

"Preliminary inquiry has revealed that two or three persons were making the bombs and two went off accidentally. The injured is a criminal and has several cases pending against him," said deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora. He said a case had been registered and efforts were on to nab the others involved.

Sources said some youth had been frequently using the terrace of the single-storey structure on the school campus for illegal activities.

"We were in class when we heard a loud explosion. Later, we saw a bleeding man running out of the campus," said Mandakini Swain, a teacher.

"I was busy at work when the incident occurred," said headmistress Pramila Tarai, adding that she had verbally reported the issue of outsiders entering the campus to the higher authorities.
