Ganja seized, 2 in net

Sambalpur: Dhanupali police on Wednesday seized 14kg of ganja and arrested two persons in this connection. The accused have been identified as Mithun Bag, 22, of Lephripara and Deshman Mahakul, 21, of Belpahar. The duo were coming from the Boinda area of Sambalpur on a bike when the police intercepted them and seized the cannabis.

Suicide

Berhampur: Sanjita Pradhan, 25, wife of Niranjan Pradhan, a resident of Govindapur under Seragada police station in Ganjam, on Tuesday committed suicide after poisoning her two-year-old daughter Pooja. She was being tortured for dowry. The mother-daughter duo died at MKCG Medical College and Hospital after they were shifted from Seragada Primary Health Centre in a serious condition on the same day. Sanjita’s brother Bulu alleged that her in-laws were torturing her for more dowry especially after she gave birth to a girl child two years ago.

Road mishap

Berhampur: A 58-year-old woman was killed and another was injured when a truck hit the autorickshaw in which they were travelling at Kanishi in Berhampur. The deceased has been identified as S. Gourma. The injured autorickshaw driver was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.

Slum notice

Sambalpur: The civic body in Burla on Wednesday served a notice on the occupants of a dilapidated slum clearance building to vacate the structure. At present, around 24 families are staying the building, which was built in 1964, by the central government. However, some of the occupants reacted sharply to the notice of the civic body. Employees of Burla notified area council, among others, occupy the building.

7 arrested

Cuttack: Seven dacoits were arrested and firearms were seized from their possession. According to cops, the group was arrested while they were planning to commit a major crime. Seven motorcycles, five mobile phones and firearms, including a pistol, two live bombs and two swords have also been recovered. However, five others managed to flee, police said.

Mahul seized

Bhubaneswar: The Rourkela and Birmitrapur excise department on Wednesday seized a truck loaded with 300 bags of Mahul worth about Rs 2 lakh near Jhamankira at Raiboga Birmitrapur area. The driver and his helper were arrested.

Complaint

Bhubaneswar: Airfield police have registered a case following a complaint from a businessman, Deepak Pradhan, who suffered injuries on Tuesday night when two motorcycle-borne youths fired at him near Panchikuli village. Pradhan, was returning home around 9pm on Tuesday, when these youths intercepted and fired at him. Pradhan’s family members rushed him to a private hospital. olice said they have started a manhunt to arrest the culprits.
