Multi-purpose tower on anvil

bhubaneswar: A state-of-the-art multi-storey tower for general purpose will come up shortly on Janpath near Hotel Marrion as a joint venture between the Odisha Khadi and Village Industries Board and the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco). The tower, to be Ekamra tower, will be set up at a cost of Rs 169.54 crore. Chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra reviewed its progress and asked to complete the bidding and contract award process by January 2014. Mohapatra has also directed Idco to make appropriate planning and arrangements for security and maintenance of the building.

Bhushan notice

Bhubaneswar: Orissa High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the state government on another PIL on alleged violation of safety measures at the Bhusan Steel Plant in Dhenkanal, where three persons had died and 28 others severely injured in a fire accident at a blast furnace on November 13. The PIL, filed by the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum, had sought the court’s direction for a CBI probe into the accident at blast furnace-II and direction to the Bhusan Steel Plant authorities to pay adequate compensation to the victims.

Kerala cops

Bhubaneswar: Kerala police raided a business establishment beside Cuttack road and interrogated its owner. The owner is accused of fraudulently making and distributing induction-cooking heaters with the name and trademark of a Bangalore-based private company. Kadavanthra police station had registered a complaint in October.

Suravi today

Bhubaneswar: Suravi, the annual children’s festival organised by the schools and mass education department, will start from Thursday. The three-day event will feature an awareness mela on the midday meal scheme on the first day and will be followed by creative activities on the next two days.

Medals

Bhubaneswar: Rajeswari Bhoi of Sundargarh and Damayanti Murmu of Bhubaneswar bagged two medals in the ongoing 29th National Junior Athletic Championship-2013 at Kanteerva Stadium in Bangalore. While Rajeswari won silver medal in 100-metre hurdle in the U-18 group, clocking 14.71 seconds, Damayanti secured a bronze medal in the U-18 javelin throw event, covering a distance of 40.30 metres.

Maoist held

Bhubaneswar: Security personnel in Malkangiri district arrested a wanted Maoist on Tuesday evening from a forest during a search operation. Era Padiami alias Mukesh, 30, was held during a joint operation by the BSF and police in Kanaguda forest in the Kalimela police station limits.
