Igknight-2013, the cultural fest of the Asian School of Business Management (ASBM), Bhubaneswar, was celebrated on January 21 and 22. The fest brought together about 400 students from 19 B-schools in the country on a common platform to showcase their talent. The extravaganza featured various competitions and events such as Markfest, Best Business Manager, Nach Baliye, Ad-Diction, Counter-Strike, Extempore, Poster Competition, Winquiz, and fashion show among others.

While Amit Kumar of ASBM emerged winner in Ad-Diction, Subhonil Chatterjee of IBS-Kolkata was adjudged the best business manager. Salila Ranjan Sahu of ASBM won Counter-Strike and the team of Gurpreet Sidhu and Divya Verma of Sri Sri University grabbed the top honours in extempore. Divya Priyadarshini Das of Biju Pattnaik College of Science and Education danced her way to the champion slot in Nach Baliye.

Anjali Srikanth of Centurion University was crowned the beauty queen in the fashion show while Saishree Mohanty of ASBM Institute of BBA finished in the runners-up position.

Artist’s canvas

Fine brush strokes and a palette of alluring colours are grabbing eyeballs at Visual Dialogue 2, an exhibition of recent paintings, sculptures and video installations by 13 noted Indian senior artists which began on January 29 at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. Manas Ranjan Jena, a faculty member of the B.K. College of Art and Crafts, Bhubaneswar, is the lone participant from the state. “An artist is a sensitive social creature and has some social responsibilities to respond to things happening in his environs. So, I wanted to express my retort to crimes against women,” said the 43-year-old painting professor. Lyricist Javed Akhtar inaugurated the exhibition, which is on till February 4.

Sport meet

The Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, in association with Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Metro organised Para Athlos, a sport meet for differently-abled children on January 26. More than 80 students of both senior and junior age groups from Shri Harsha Memorial School for the Deaf and School for Deaf and Dumb, Palaspalli, took part in the event. The special children participated in activities such as 100 metre and 50 metre races, sack race, lemon-and-spoon race, balloon race, three-legged race, basketball, throw ball and volley ball with great enthusiasm. The winners received gold, silver, bronze medals, and trophies from the XIMB director Father Paul Fernandes and dean (administration) Father P. D. Thomas. Para Athlos was organised by the social responsibility cell of XIMB.

There is no better regulation than self-regulation to control the syndrome of paid news, said speakers at a seminar called “Paid news: The Credibility of Media is At Stake” at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanal, on January 29. “No one should regulate the media. Regulating media (through government) will create an emergency-like situation. Hence, it should correct itself,” said former director general of police Sarat Chandra Mishra, who addressed the students on the occasion meant to commemorate the National Newspaper Day. “Media organisations are influenced by commercial interests. The practice of paid news has degraded ethical values of newspapers,” said secretary of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Odisha, P.K. Mishra, while insisting on “self-introspection” by media to regain its credibility.

Women in focus

The english department of the BJB Autonomous College, Bhubaneswar, organised a UGC-sponsored national seminar on “Feminism: The Indian Context” on January 27. Professors from different parts of the state and outside participated in the daylong deliberations. While college principal Suresh Chandra Patnaik added a new dimension to the discussion by drawing on the theories from life sciences, students Adyasha Panda and Lakshmi Kumari sought to highlight the atrocities against women through literary and textual representations.

Tech advice

A daylong Microsoft Web Camp was held at the Dhaneswar Rath Institute of Engineering and Management Studies (Driems), Cuttack, on January 29. The head of Tata Consultancy Services, Manoj Panda, inaugurated the camp and emphasised on the importance of knowledge sharing in the IT sector.

Literary meet

Rock Pebbles, an international peer-reviewed English literary journal, celebrated its 26th annual day at the KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, on January 27 by felicitating famous litterateur P. Raja with the Rock Pebbles Award. This was followed by a poetry reading session in which several poets of national and international repute participated.
