Lady cop suspended
Bhubaneswar: A lady cop was suspended for allegedly assaulting a rajguru (royal priest) from Nepal outside the Jagannath temple in Puri. Madhav Prasad Bhattarai had filed a complaint with Temple police station, alleging that the cop misbehaved with him and did not let him enter the temple doubting his religion.
Dengue
Bhubaneswar: The state government will conduct a special sanitation drive across Odisha on August 13 and 14 to control dengue outbreak. The drive will cover the secretariat and all government offices. An official review showed 119 dengue positive cases had been detected in six districts, but all patients were out of danger.
School review
Bhubaneswar: School and mass education officials at district and block level will monitor at least one school in their jurisdiction, besides monitoring midday meal scheme and teaching. School and mass education minister Rabi Narayan Nanda took the decision after a two-day review of schools.
Ashima dead
Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader and secretary of the All India Mahila Congress Ashima Mahananda died after a long battle with cancer. In April, the National Commission for Women had appointed her as part of a three-member team probing into the gang rape of an Odia woman in New Delhi.
Admission
Bhubaneswar: Application for vacant seat enrolment in Plus Two and Plus Three will be held between July 25 and August 1. Candidates, who did not apply for admission, did not get a call or skipped admission, are eligible to apply. Students can also use the chance to switch over to their preferred colleges.
Ganja seized
Sambalpur: Six persons, including a woman, were arrested and 20 quintals of ganja worth Rs 1 crore were seized from them at a village in Sambalpur. Sleuths from the Narcotic Control Bureau and the state excise department are looking for four others involved in the racket.
Major port
Paradip: Paradip Port Trust, Odisha's lone major port, have been conferred Major Port Award for 2012-13 for cargo handling and logistics performance, said port trust chairman Sudhanshu Sekhara Mishra, who received the award in Chennai.
Train timing
Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Duronto Express will run on Wednesdays instead of Sundays from September 4. In the return direction, it will leave Delhi on Thursdays and not Mondays.
Cash loot
Berhampur: Police arrested two persons for allegedly looting cash about Rs 4.76 lakh from the ticket counter in Berhampur railway station on July 14.
Murder weapon found
Bhubaneswar: The city police on Wednesday said that they have recovered the weapon used by retired army doctor Somnath Parida, who allegedly murdered his wife Ushashree and chopped her body into hundreds of pieces.
Earlier, legal experts had said that the absence of weapon of murder would weaken the case against Parida, who is at present lodged in the Jharapada jail. The recovery of the murder weapon is believed to be a major success for the police as the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate last week had rejected a petition of the police for a narcoanalysis test of Parida.
Congress jab
Bhubaneswar: Former industries minister and senior Congress leader Niranjan Patnaik slammed the state government for its “wrong” industrialisation policy, alleging that it had signed various MoUs without proper thinking. He said it had created a mess that would affect the long-term economic interests of the state.
Arrest
Paradip: Police arrested two persons on charges of abducting a woman on July 21 due to a family feud. Tikan Nayak and Tapan Sahu had intercepted the victim from a bus terminal and kidnapped her, but she managed to escape from the deserted house, where she had been held captive.
Snatchers
Rourkela: Police arrested two snatchers, both in their early 20s, and recovered Rs 1.78 lakh stolen from a steel company employee, a pistol, two mobile phones, an iron rod and a bike from them. Another member of their gang is still at large.
New session
Bhubaneswar: Candidates, who have got fresh allotment in third round of admission at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, can take admission between July 25 and 28. The orientation and registration will be held on July 31, while classes will start from August 1.
Slum demand
Bhubaneswar: A delegation from the Salia Sahi slum met governor S.C. Jamir and demanded land pattas as land rights to the occupants of the slum. They also stressed on the need for a hospital and a high school.
