Cong targets Modi

Bhubaneswar: The Congress on Wednesday targeted the BJP’s election campaign committee chairman and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. On the concluding day of its weeklong campaign to lodge FIR against government at Salepur, Congress leader B.K. Hariprasad said: “May Lord Jagannath bless him with a good sense.” Other state Congress leaders, including Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Jaydev Jena, also criticised the state government.

Accident

Cuttack: A woman died in a road mishap on NH-5 at Tangi on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Bilasini Nayak, 70, of Rajakana area within the limits of Tangi block. The incident occurred when Nayak, who was on her way to collect her widow pension, was hit by an unknown vehicle while crossing the highway around 11am.

Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths on Wednesday arrested an assistant agriculture engineer for demanding illegal gratification of Rs 16,000. Mohanty demanded the gratification to clear the bill of Ajaya Kumar Lenka, who had supplied 42 pump sets.

Theft charge

Balasore: Town police arrested two goons in connection with a theft incident on Wednesday. The arrested, Sk Samir, 35, of Chattrapur in Ganjam, and Rabi Nayak, 25, of Sovarampur in Balasore, had allegedly snatched Rs 5 lakh in cash from a teacher on July 4.

Prison death

Balangir: Jagdish Bhoi, an under trial in a murder case, died at Titilagarh sub-jail on Tuesday. Jail authorities said he died of cardiac arrest.

Assault cuffs

Paradip: A 58-year-old man has been held by Erasama police on charge of physically abusing his 15-year-old granddaughter on Wednesday. Dukhishyam Mallick from Tantia village, was arrested after victim’s mother lodged an FIR alleging sexual assault.
