Cuttack, April 8: The district administration today sealed two nursing homes and their in-house medicine stores for functioning without registration in the city.

Tulasi Nursing home, a 10-bed medical facility at Sahebadabad, and United Hospital at Haripur were sealed during a raid for running illegally.

Official sources said that the registration paper of both the nursing homes had expired two years ago and that the two medical facilities had been operating illegally ever since.

A joint squad of the district collector detected the violation during a routine inspection, said additional district medical officer Abhaya Patnaik.

Tulasi Nursing Home had come up in a building from where Shah Nursing Home used to run in 2015.

Tulasi Nursing Home was functioning after changing its name from Shah Nursing Home which was sealed by district administration during a raid last year.

"When we entered the premises, we found that the seal of the previous nursing home (Shah Nursing Home) was broken and Tulasi Nursing Home was functioning from the same campus. However, this new facility was being managed by another owner. We will register a fresh case in connection with this violation," Patnaik added.

United hospital on Haripur Road was also sealed as it was functioning illegally for the last two years ever since its registration expired in 2014.

Officials of the directorate of medical education and training (DMET) had sealed a nursing home and pathological centre at Ranihaat and Mangalabag area on June 29 in 2015.

On March 15, the district health officials had seized a portable ultra sound machine from a nursing home at Ranihat on March 15.

The machine was seized during a raid on a private clinic following complaints that illegal sex determination was being conducted here.

A case under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPPNDT), 1994, was also registered.

The raids are usually conducted to verify whether the prescribed norms under the Orissa Clinical Establishment (Control and Regulation) Rule, 1994, are being followed by the nursing homes and pathology units or not.

According to the rule, the owners of clinical establishments should apply for renewal of registration at least one month before the expiry.

Besides, all the ultra sound machines and other equipment need to be registered with the health department and the units should display the names of the doctors using the machines.
