Bhubaneswar, May 3: Inspector general of police (law and order) Sunil Roy has been named the new police commissioner of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

He replaces Bijay Kumar Sharma, who has been made additional director general of police (ADGP), Crime Branch, following a rejig in the state police administration. At present, Sharma is on leave.

“I am yet to receive the official order. It is through media and others that I came to know about this,” said Roy, adding that it was too early for him to talk about his plans and vision in his new role.

A 1987-batch IPS officer, Roy began his career as a trainee additional superintendent of police in Koraput in 1988. Later, he worked as a sub-divisional police officer in Berhampur and was then posted as an additional superintendent of police in Koraput. Roy also served as superintendent of police in Sundargarh and was then a commandant of the Central Industrial Security Force for four years.

He was on central deputation from 2004 till December 2011 when he was appointed as inspector general of police (law and order) with his office in Cuttack.

Following today’s rejig, Sharma replaces Abhay, who will now be the new ADGP (law and order). Yogesh Bahadur Khurania has been named as inspector general (police training) and Sanjeeb Kumar Panda the deputy inspector general (headquarters).

D.S. Kuttey has been appointed as deputy inspector general (special intelligence wing), Debadatta Singh has been named as deputy inspector general (southwestern range) and Surendra Panwar has been posted as director (vigilance). Gopabandhu Mallick will be the additional director-general, Human Rights Protection Cell.
