Bhubaneswar, Dec. 31: The 19-year-old nephew of a deputy superintendent of police was among six youths who were arrested for allegedly planning to rob the house of his uncle at Jagannath Vihar.

Police said the deputy superintendent of police was posted in Ganjam district and his family members — his wife and 18-year-old son — lived in their rented house here.

The nephew, Siba Prasad Mallick, a Plus Two dropout, used to visit their house frequently.

Yesterday, the police officer’s wife had left for her village in Puri for a few days. Finding that their son was alone at home, Siba had allegedly planned to commit the dacoity with five others.

He had hired six youths, including two persons with criminal antecedents. Sibad had promised to pay them Rs 10,000 each for the job.

Acting on a tip-off that seven persons were consuming alcohol at an abandoned place at Mancheshwar, the police had raided the place.

One of them managed to escape.

The police took Siba Prasad Mallick, Surendra Majhi, 45, Abinash Parida, 19, Surendra Rout, 30, Krushna Chandra Sahu, 24, and Titu Sahu, 24, into custody.

All of them are from Puri district.

The cops also seized four daggers, three iron rods and other objects used for breaking windows.

The police said Majhi and Rout had a number of burglary cases registered against them at various police stations of Puri and Bhubaneswar.

On October 22, the police had arrested five persons, including the nephew of a complainant, for allegedly committing a dacoity at the residence of a retired deputy general manager of the State Bank of India, at Chandrasekharpur on October 11.

The goons had entered the house when the nephew of the complainant, who was the mastermind, was present there.

After he had gained entry into the house, others followed him.

Brandishing guns, the group decamped with cash worth Rs 1.5 lakh and gold ornaments weighing 50 grams. Interestingly, the nephew had informed the police about the incident.
