Cuttack, Aug. 19: Business establishments in the Millennium City today downed their shutters in protest against the death of a person because of alleged negligence in treatment at a private nursing home in Mangalabag.

Jagabandhu Shukla, a resident of Mallasahi in Mangalabag, died while undergoing an operation at the General Nursing Home last night. It is alleged that his death was beacuse of an overdose of anaesthesia. Shukla, along with his brother, used to run a small grocery shop in Mangalabag.

“It was a clear case of negligence. My brother died after he was administered anaesthesia before the surgery,” said Chintamani Shukla, brother of the deceased.

Jagabandhu, who was injured in a road accident, was admitted in the nursing home on August 16. He had sustained fractures on his left knee in the mishap.

Family members of the deceased said the lady anaesthetist had immediately left the operation theatre after administering anaesthesia to the patient. “Without waiting for the patient to recover or checking his condition, she went out of the operation theatre at 6.30pm and returned only around 8.30pm. We were informed about the death after 9.30pm,” said Chintamani.

Alleging negligence in treatment, relatives of the deceased and other local residents ransacked the nursing home.

They pelted stones and damaged equipment inside the operation theatre. The agitators also manhandled the lady anaesthetist, Kalpana Nayak.

Senior officials of police, including deputy commissioner of police Praveen Kumar, rushed to spot and brought the situation under control.

Adequate policemen were deployed at the nursing home keeping in view the palpable tension in the area. The authorities of the nursing home could not be contacted to comment on the issue.

“This is certainly a serious issue as it was a simple surgery of the leg and nothing complicated,” said Ravindra Swain, a shop owner. Over 200 shops remained closed to express solidarity with the family members of the deceased. The post-mortem was conducted at SCB Medical College and Hospital later in the afternoon today.

“The person died because of negligence on part of the anaesthetists and the doctor conducting the surgery. Today, all the shops except medicine stores in the area have been closed as a mark of protest,” said local councillor Pabitra Bhuyan.
