Paradip, Dec. 20: Doctors at a government-run hospital allegedly cut a portion of the large intestine of a 27-year-old woman while operating on her fallopian tubes during tubectomy.

Jharana, spouse of a daily wage earner Ramesh Mallick of Kansar village in Kendrapara district, is battling for her life at the intensive care unit of a hospital in Cuttack.

Tubectomy is a surgical procedure to prevent pregnancies in which a woman's fallopian tubes are clamped and blocked or severed and sealed.

Yesterday, Jharana visited Indupur Community Health Centre in Kendrapara for sterilisation. However, doctors of the hospital cut a portion of her large intestine while operating on her fallopian tubes.

"After the surgery, she had severe pain in the abdomen. We were forced to move her to the headquarters hospital in Kendrapara as her health deteriorated. Later, she was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack," said Ramesh.

Kendrapara chief district medical officer Nirajan Swain said: "A portion of the intestine had been cut during the tubectomy at the Indupur Community Health Centre, because of which she developed complications. She was rushed immediately to district headquarters hospital. As her condition was serious, she was referred to SCB. Her health has now improved and she is out danger."

Ramesh has filed an FIR at Kendrapada police station and alleged that the doctor and other staff members of the hospital had committed gross negligence while conducting the surgery. He demanded stern legal action against them.

"Police are investigating the case. We are waiting for the medical report before initiating legal action," said Kendrapara police station inspector Sanjeev Mohanty.

Instances of medical negligence, both at the government-run and private health institutes, have hogged the spotlight in recent months. A newborn boy died minutes after his birth when he accidentally slipped from a doctor's grasp at the gynaecology and obstetrics wards of Kendrapara district headquarters hospital on December 9.

Forgetful surgeons of a private hospital in Jagatsinghpur allegedly left a scissor inside a woman who had been operated on earlier this year.

An eight-year-old girl child down with high fever and respiratory ailment was wrongfully administered anti-rabies vaccine on March 22 at the Jagatsinghpur district headquarters hospital.

In February, a sweeper at a government-run hospital in Jagatsinghpur had to carry out post-delivery stitching on a woman who delivered a baby as the doctor left the operation theatre to attend to another patient.
