Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday began performance review of various departments ahead of completing another year in office on May 21.

The exercise will continue till May 17.

The chief minister is reviewing the commitments the BJD had made in its 2014 election manifesto.

On the first day, Naveen reviewed performance of school and mass education, SC and ST development, health and family welfare and law departments. The ministers, along with respective departmental secretaries, reported on what had been achieved in the last one year.

Like a tough taskmaster, Naveen listened to the reports and often patted his colleagues for their performances.

However, the Opposition said the departments only painted a rosy picture about their activities, but failed to present the grim realities.

School and mass education minister Badri Naryan Patra said: "The chief minister made it clear that the department must fulfil promises made in the manifesto. We had worked particularly hard to set up Adharsa Vidyalayas and to give scholarships and bicycles to students."

On being asked how many marks he was expecting from the chief minister, Patra said: "It's better to ask the chief minister."

Sources said the chief minister praised the school and mass education department for publishing matriculation results in time despite teachers' agitation.

Naveen was also impressed with the health and family welfare department, particularly with regard to Niramaya (free distribution of medicine) scheme, free diagnostic scheme Nidan and comprehensive cancer care scheme.

SC/ ST development minister Ramesh Majhi said: "I am confident that I have given a good account of my department. The chief minister seems happy with the performance of my department".

Earlier, Naveen in a letter to all his ministerial colleagues had asked them to come prepared for the review.

Shrugging criticism of the likes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had described his government as "soi hui sarkar" (a government in deep slumber) in 2016, Naveen had made clear that he would go ahead on the path of development.

"Our government believes in work and not in propaganda (speeches). Even Ratan Tata during his recent visit to the state had acknowledged the state's march on the path of industrialisation," said a minister.

State Congress working president Chiranjeev Biswal said: "People will speak at the time of elections."

BJP MLA Pradeep Purohit said: "The education system has been destroyed during the last 18 years and the state has also failed to implement the Odisha Reservation of Vacancies Act."
