Cuttack, Jan. 19: Every monsoon, the residents of Cuttack suffer from waterlogging due to high water levels of the nearby rivers and inadequate drainage system in the city.

The residents of Pattapole area under ward 14 are worst hit by waterlogging during the monsoon season. The drains of this area, which are connected to the main stormwater channel no. 1, overflow during the rainy season creating problems for the residents.

“We have been facing waterlogging problems for many years. Though there are a number of sub-drains in the locality, it fails to resolve the waterlogging as water from here is unable to flow into the main drain,” said local resident Seikh Sabir Bax.

“It is one of the low-lying areas of the city and every year the drain water enters our homes as there is no proper drainage system here,” said another local resident Gora Khan.

Many residents also say that though there has been a lot of development works, including repairs of culverts and drains, these have not come to the help of the local residents as the major portions of existing drains in the area are blocked.

Local councillor A. Ahalya Devi informed the drains are cleaned and siltation works are carried out annually in the area. There are proposals to raise the height of the roads and drains in the wards, which can solve the waterlogging problem to some extent.
