Bhubaneswar, Feb. 7: Four youths were arrested today in connection with their alleged involvement in four cases of harassment against women here.
Two youths were arrested for molesting and gesturing indecently to two girls, while another was nabbed for not marrying a girl after having a physical relationship with a false promise of marriage. The fourth accused was held for molesting his aunt last year.
This morning, Saheed Nagar police arrested a youth, Swapna Sudhir Biswal, 27, for making indecent gestures at a girl student on the Utkal University campus. The complainant, a student of journalism, lodged a complaint with the cops. “We booked him under sections 509 and 294 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). After a medical examination was done, he was produced before court in the afternoon,” said K.P. Mishra, inspector in charge of Saheed Nagar police station.
In the second case, Mahila police arrested a youth, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, 27, for not keeping his promise of marrying a 21-year-old student after having a physical relationship with her. Police said Sinha, who hailed from Nalanda in Bihar, was a software engineer working for a private company in Chandrasekharpur.
“We tried to counsel both of them, but they were not interested in a mutual settlement. Then we registered a case and produced the youth before court after a medical examination,” said a police officer at Mahila police station.
In the third case, the Mahila police arrested Paban Kumar Pandey, 25, who hails from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, for molesting a girl in Saheed Nagar this morning.
In the fourth case, the Mahila police arrested accused Ashok Sethi, 27, for molesting his aunt in Saheed Nagar last year. The cops said the accused, who hailed from Aska in Ganjam district, had been absconding since September last year.He was produced before court in the afternoon.
All the accused were sent to Jharapada Special Jail after a local court rejected their bail pleas.
