Bhubaneswar, May 11: Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra today accused the government of indulging in the politics of vengeance and even allowing its ministers to use unparliamentary language against the Opposition members.
Mishra's allegations came amidst uproarious scenes in the Assembly which failed to transact normal business for the seventh consecutive day today.
Mishra cited the example of law minister Arun Sahu's remark on May 4, who described him as senile and said his remarks reflected deterioration in the standards of debate in the House. The Congress leader demanded that the remarks of the minister should be expunged from the proceedings.
Soon after the House began its proceedings today, it witnessed several adjournments with Opposition members rushing into the well raising anti-government slogans and demanding chief minister Naveen Patnaik's explanation on the allegations of Rs 8 crore having been deposited on a single day into BJD's account. The Opposition has alleged that the money was a reward for state government having recommended a coal block in favour of Aditya Birla group.
Mishra also reiterated the Opposition's demand for the resignation of Justice M.M. Das as the head of the commission probing the money deposit collection scam following his controversial remarks on April 28 at an event organised by the ruling party.
"The state government should institute a probe by the Lok Ayukta on this issue. I will offer evidence to back all my allegations. If I fail to do this, I will submit my resignation," said Mishra.
Mishra also lambasted the BJD members for not allowing him to speak on the floor of the House on several occasions when he had raised vital issues. "Such a stand will only demoralise the Opposition," he said.
"If any one tries to speak against the government, attempts are being made to stifle his voice. Even the government threatens to lodge criminal cases against him. Such an attitude can not be tolerated," the leader said.
However, BJD members Mahesh Sahu and Pravat Ranjan Biswal objected to Mishra's demand for Justice M.M. Das' resignation saying the matter pertained to judiciary and hence cannot be discussed in the House. This provoked the Opposition members who trooped into the well of the House raising slogans against Naveen. As pandemonium continued, the House was adjourned till tomorrow.
BJD spokesperson Samir Dash said: "We can't help it if the Opposition raises unjustified demands. Justice M.M. Das issue cannot be raised in the Assembly."
