Bhawanipatna: A class VI student was allegedly abducted and raped for two days before being dumped on the roadside at Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district.

The news of the rape of the minor comes in the midst of a nationwide and global outrage against the gang-rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa Bano at Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir.

On learning about the incident, the family members of the girl lodged a complaint at the Thuamul Rampur police station. Acting on a complaint, police on Friday arrested Munna Naik, 30, who is a distant relative of the girl.

According to the police complaint, the girl had gone to nearby Dumerpadar village to attend a social event at her uncle's place on April 17. The incident occurred when she was returning home in the evening. The accused gagged and overpowered her and took her to his house. There she was kept in confinement and raped for two days before being dumped on the roadside.

The matter came to light after the girl narrated her ordeals to her family members after returning home on Thursday evening. The Thuamul Rampur police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (Pocso) Act.

The girl's mother has demanded justice and severe punishment for the accused.

"We were searching for her after she went missing on Tuesday evening. She returned on Thursday evening and told us about the incident. We want justice for our child," said the girl's mother.

Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Bhawanipatna Biranchi Narayan Dehury said the police had registered a case on the basis of a complaint by the victim's family.

"We have registered a case. The accused has been identified as a distant relative (brother-in-law) of the girl. Both the girl and the accused have been sent for medical examination at the district headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna. Investigation is on," the SDPO said.

This is the second such incident in three days in Kalahandi district.
