Minister unveils mega health plans

Bhubaneswar, March 27: The state government is planning to set up a para-medical training centre in Bhubaneswar to impart training to staff nurses and other paramedics.

“The para-medical training centre will come up at an investment of Rs 75 crore. All modern facilities will be available in the training centre to impart quality training to the para-medical staff,” said health minister Prasanna Acharya.

Replying to the budget discussion on health department on Saturday, he said the number of beds in the intensive care units (ICU) of the Capital Hospital would be increased to 16 from the existing five.

“As a large number of people are showing interest in yoga therapy and naturopathy, the state government will also set up a yoga and naturopathy hospital in Bhubaneswar at a cost of Rs 35 crore. This will come up near the airport in Bhubaneswar,” he said.

Acharya further said that Rs 2463.64 crore would be invested in health sector and three hundred medical seats would be added to existing capacity of the three medical colleges in the state. Hundred seats each would be added to the Sriram Chandra Bhanja (S.C.B.) Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, Veer Surendra Sai (V.S.S.) Medical College and Hospital, Burla and Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati (M.K.C.G.) Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur. The three medical colleges together have 450 seats at present.

“The state government will apply to the Centre to get the necessary sanction for the addition of three hundred medical seats in the medical colleges of the state,” he said.

Acharya further said that around 50 public health centres have been opened in the last 10 years and the Redhakhol and B.M. Pur hospitals have been given the status of the sub-divisional hospitals.

“Steps have been taken to fill the hospital vacancies at various levels. Around 1,315 doctors have been appointed and another 615 doctors will be given appointment soon. The child and maternal mortality rate in the state has gone down over the years,” he said.
