Bhubaneswar, Sept. 14: A low-pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger heavy rainfall in several places in the state, the regional meteorological centre here said.

Met officials said that the low pressure area over west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal persisted over the same area today with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6km above mean sea level. “Rain or thundershower may occur at several places across the state under its impact. Heavy rainfall would occur at one or two places over south Odisha,” said director of regional meteorological centre, S.C. Sahu.

He also said that surface wind with speeds between 35 and 40kmph and would move along and off the coast in south Odisha. The weathermen advised fishermen to be cautious while venturing into the sea.

Several parts of the state received rainfall under the influence of the low pressure today. While Puri received a rainfall of 19 mm, Chandbali received 12mm and Paradip 10 mm.

Residents heaved a sigh following a relative dry spell.

“We have been reeling under humid conditions for the past few weeks. The low-pressure brought much-desired relief. However, we are hopeful that the reservoirs would receive sufficient water helping power generation and bringing relief from frequent power cuts,” said local resident Anirban Jena.

Heavy rainfall is forecast at one or two places in the state for another five days. “The rainfall is likely to increase from September 20 onwards,” said a met official.
