Sambalpur, Oct. 2: More than 500 people today participated in a mini-marathon, which was organised by the Khetrajpur Marwari Yuva Manch, to raise awareness among residents to keep the city clean and green.
The marathon, which started from Commissioner Colony, also culminated there after passing through Jail Chhak, Nelson Mandela Chhak, Municipality Chhak, Golebazar Chhak, Laxmi Talkies Chhak, VSS Marg, Zilla School Chhak.
There were four groups in the marathon. Men and women participants aged below 17 were divided into two groups as were those aged above 17.
“The city has become a dumping yard. Outsiders get a negative impression of our city because of poor sanitation. This marathon has tried to create awareness among the people,” said Parag Agrawal, an organising committee member.
“Fifty-three social organisations helped to make the marathon successful. Students of 38 educational institutions participated in the marathon. Five hundred and forty people took party in the mini-marathon,” said Parag.
“Through this event, we want create awareness among people to keep their surroundings clean. If we keep our surroundings clean, we can keep the city clean. This is an appeal to the people to make Sambalpur beautiful and green,” said Lilima Kishan, a participant in the marathon.
“People from all walks of life took part in the marathon. I am really happy to be a part of the marathon. I ran to create awareness,” said Vikash Naik, another participant.
“This is the first time that a marathon was organised to create awareness for a beautiful Sambalpur. This is a noble initiative,” said Minati Meher, a home-maker.
“Cleanliness is the biggest concern for the residents of the city now,” said Dhananjaya Satpathy, a local resident.
