Bhubaneswar, Dec. 4: Officials of the economic offences wing today arrested one person for encroaching government land measuring 2.84 acres in Puri town.
The accused, Suresh Mohapatra, 52, was arrested from Nayagarh. The officials said the encroached land's approximate market value was around Rs 35 crore.
The police said the accused, in connivance with others, had made a fraudulent land document and even moved the court seeking possession of the land. However, following a complaint lodged by the Puri district collector with the economic offences wing in August, the cops took action and nabbed him.
The investigating agency had arrested Mohapatra's younger brother Duryodhan two months ago.
"Prima-facie, we found the documents produced by the accused to be forged, and we are investigating further to ascertain the involvement of others in the case," said an official.
On November 22, the wing officials had arrested a 37-year-old realtor for allegedly duping a person of Rs 30 lakh after promising him a duplex near Uttara Chhak on the city outskirts.
Again on November 17, the officials had arrested the director of Noida-based Brys International (P) Ltd Rahul Gaur on fraud charges. The accused had duped a businessman of Rs 18 crore on the pretext of providing three acres at Pahala. Gaur was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Delhi-based realtor, Saran Pal Singh Sethy, who had earlier lodged a complaint with Balianta police, accusing Gaur of defrauding him.
