Balangir: Government Railway Police (GRP) on Wednesday arrested a man with Rs 4.68 lakh in counterfeit currencies from the Bangalore bound Hatia-Yesvantpur Express at Titilagarh station.
The accused has been identified as Ramachandra Bhoi of Dukurla village in Bhatli police limits of Bargarh district. The Titilagarh GRP have taken the accused into custody and are interrogating him for further details.
Bhoi was initially detained for attacking a CRPF jawan, travelling in the same compartment, with a knife. Sources said Raj Upadhyaya, a CRPF jawan who hails from Ranchi, noticed that Bhoi was restless and his behaviour was unnatural.
Bhoi was carrying a bag with him and got angry when Raj asked him about it. The two then had a heated argument and Bhoi attacked Raj.
The jawan, however, caught hold of him and informed the GRP and they took him into custody. When GRP personnel searched his bag, they found counterfeit currencies of Rs 50, Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denominations worth Rs 4.68 lakh.
Raj was admitted to a local hospital and released after treatment.
The seizure comes as a major success against fake currency racketeers who are active on trains. The police said they were trying to find out the origin and the destination of the fake currencies.
Titilagarh GRP inspector-in-charge Mohan Nayak said they acted upon the accused after a passenger raised an alarm.
"We got a call from a passenger in the Hatia-Yesvantpur Express that one person was carrying a suspicious bag and had attacked him. The GRP and RPF personnel apprehended the passenger from the coach and searched the bag. It contained the fake currencies amounting to Rs 4.68 lakh. We arrested him and have begun an investigation," he said. Nayak also said it was important to know the motive behind such fake currency rackets.
