Bhubaneswar, May 5: The anti-Vedanta movement got a shot in its arm after the Lok Pal, on Wednesday, submitted a special report on land acquisition for the proposed Vedanta university on Puri-Konark marine drive.

In its report, the Lok Pal has reportedly said that the government had followed none of his recommendations.

Earlier, the Lok Pal had, in an order on a case pertaining to Vedanta’s land acquisition process on March 19, 2010, raised nine questions and pointed out that all rules on land acquisition had been blatantly violated at the time of acquisition.

The Lok Pal had questioned the legality of land being acquired for private company. It had asked the government to take action on its recommendations. However, the government had refused to take any action in this regard.

In its report, the Lok Pal had indicated the chief minister’s office’s involvement in the land acquisition process for the Vedanta’s proposed university. The Lok Pal had questioned role of chief secretary Bijay Patnaik, the then higher education secretary, Ashok Tripathy, and the then revenue secretary, G.V.V. Sharma.

Sources said in its special report, the Lok Pal had come down heavily on the Orissa government for ignoring the law of the land. In its report, the Lok Pal said the compliance report submitted by the Orissa government was not satisfactory. All his recommendations have been overlooked.

Raj Bhavan sources said that the Lok Pal had sent a letter to the governor, but refused to divulge the details. “The sealed envelope is with the governor,” sources said.

Dwarika Mohan Mishra, the complainant who had filed the complaint with the Lok Pal, said: “The commission also pointed out in its report that the Orissa government dose not have any faith on the law of land. The government has made a mockery of the law. If this continues, people will lose faith in the institution of Lok Pal.”

The Lok Pal has also pointed out that the government had chosen not to act on his report as it wanted to legalise the land acquisition process. The Lok Pal said that he was forced to communicate his feelings on the government’s inaction to the governor.

However, Lok Pal Justice P.K. Patra refused to give any comments on its report at this point. Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh said: “A constitutional crisis has been created.” The Congress demanded immediate dismissal of the government for undermining authority of the Lok Pal.

On the other hand, agriculture minister Damodor Rout said: “We have utmost respect for the Lok Pal.”
