Bhubaneswar, Feb. 17: Television actress Pralipta Priyadarshini Samal, popularly known as Jessy, today was subjected to a polygraph test at the State Forensic Laboratory here in connection with the death of choreographer-turned-actor Ranjit Pattnaik aka Raja, 33.
The 26-year-old actress, who was arrested yesterday on charges of abetment to suicide, faced the test for nearly six hours.
Encounter
A criminal was injured in a police encounter at Jagannath Sadak last night. The goon, identified as Sasank Nayak, 28, suffered injuries in his right ankle and was rushed to Capital Hospital, from where he was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi said the cops had asked Nayak to stop while he was trying to escape with one of his associates on a motorcycle on the Bhubaneswar-Puri Bypass Road. "Nayak even fired one round at the police. In retaliation, the cops also opened fire," said Bhoi. The police have seized a 9mm pistol and two live bullets from Nayak.
Further investigation has revealed that Nayak was involved in seven cases, including murder and extortion. Besides, he was also involved in at least three cases of dacoity and robbery in Bhubaneswar. "Further investigation is under way to verify his antecedents," said a police officer.
Bribe cuffs
Vigilance sleuths yesterday arrested an owner of a Berhampur-based Gutkha unit for allegedly offering a bribe to a police inspector. The accused, Rabindra Kumar Patra, was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by inspector in charge of Bada Bazar police station Suresh Kumar Tripathy.
Tripathy said the accused had offered him Rs 2 lakh after the police raided the illegal gutkha manufacturing unit at Gandhi Nagar and seized huge quantity of the chewing tobacco along with machines. The accused had offered the bribe requesting him to release the items and not take any legal action against him.
"A trap was laid in the office of the inspector in charge and the accused was caught red-handed while he was offering the bribe of Rs 2 lakh. The cash has also been seized," said a vigilance official.
