The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, celebrated their foundation day with great fanfare. An alumnus of the institute, Rajendra Prasad Gupta, who is also the chairman-cum-managing director of Shiva Cement Limited, delivered the foundation day lecture. Gupta highlighted the contribution of engineers in the nation's prosperity.
The lecture was followed by prize distribution ceremony for academic excellence, excellence in sports and cultural activities. There was also a debate competition.
A cultural evening was organised at the Bhubaneswar Behera Auditorium on the NIT campus. Jatin Goswami staged Sattriya dance, which is one among the eight principal classical Indian dance traditions. It was followed by a one-act play organised by the Pantomime club of the institute. The event concluded with a contemporary dance performance organised by the Synergy and Maverick clubs of NIT, Rourkela.
I-Day celebrations
Independence Day was celebrated at the KIIT University (formerly Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technolog). Heads of the departments of various schools hoisted the Tricolour in their respective institutes. After the flag hoisting ceremony, students performed a march-past along with a cultural programme. For the first time, the girl students of KISS performed Ghumura, a tribal dance of Kalahandi.
Two health centres were inaugurated on the Independence Day at the Central University of Odisha in Koraput. Tree plantations were also carried out on the institute’s both campuses with the Koraput forest department's help.
Vice-chancellor Sachidanand Mohanty hoisted the Tricolour on the campus at Landiguda and addressed the staff members, students and children of a nearby village.
He said the university would provide 24-hour ambulance service and purchase some buses for effective transportation. Mohanty also promised free Wi-Fi connectivity on the campus.
The varsity also has plans to adopt two nearby villages for the overall development of the local residents.
Finance conclave
The Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, hosted Finomics, its annual finance conclave in Mumbai on August 16. Finomics is the flagship event in the finance domain, organised by X-Fin, a finance associate of the XIMB.
It aims to bridge the gap between industry and academia by getting industry stalwarts and alumni to share their knowledge about the nuances of finance.
Eminent industry leaders, alumni, faculty members and students attended the session.
The conclave provided an immense opportunity for the students to interact with industry stalwarts. It was conducted in two sessions. The topic of discussion for the morning session was “India as an investment destination.”
The afternoon session saw a seminar titled “Impact of board composition on the financial performance of the firm.”
It was followed by the announcement of the winners of Financius, an article-writing competition, and unveiling of Finshastra, the business magazine of X-Fin.
Practical training
The Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Bhubaneswar, started an executive development centre last week. The centre is a small hotel with 10 rooms - for which the Union ministry of tourism sanctioned Rs 3.50 crore. The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation undertook the construction. This hotel will help in the practical teaching and training of the students, who will get a chance to interact directly with the guests as a part of their curriculum. The institute at VSS Nagar is one among the 21 central institutes in the country, and it has been producing hotel management students for the past 42 years.
Awareness event
Students of School & College of Nursing at Dhaneswar Rath Institute of Engineering and Management Studies organised a community awareness programme to observe the World Breastfeeding Week. The event was organised at the community health centre at Tangi. Nursing students took part in the campaign. Various events such as poster competitions, roadshows, seminars and community awareness programmes were organised to mark the occasion. A seminar on the importance of breastfeeding also took place. Environmentalist Ashutosh Debata stressed on the various benefits of breastfeeding.
Science show
An inter-college science exhibition was held at Remuna College in Balasore last week. Around 39 projects by the students of 12 colleges were displayed in the event. The students showcased their scientific knowledge and portrayed their innovations on the occasion. Vice-president of the Emami paper mills MBS Nair and former MLA Pradipta Panda were the guests of honour, who were present at the event to encourage the students. They visited the kiosks and discussed about the exhibits with the participants. Jayanti Nayak and Harish Chandra Baug, the principals of the degree and junior college, managed the event, along with other staff members.
Orientation programme
The 9th orientation programme of DAV School of Business Management was held on the campus of the institute on Wednesday. The new batch of management students took oath to follow the quality education that would be imparted with dedication, sincerity and integrity. Principal of DSBM D.N. Mishra in his welcome address briefed the students on three A’s followed by the institute. These are academic benchmark, activity calendar and achievement.
The President of DSBM, M.M.Panda, addressed the students and told them to acquire knowledge and use it for the betterment of the society. IPS officer S.K.Upadhyay, who is the director of investigations, Odisha Human Rights Commission was the chief guest. He shared an experience of the former President APJ Abdul Kalam with an anecdote that symbolises commitment and values.
