Bhubaneswar/Cuttack, Sept. 4: A crime branch team today recovered Rs 4 lakh in cash from hundis (donation boxes) and gold ornaments, including a golden crown, from the Trahi Achyuta Ashram of Surendra Mishra alias Sura baba at Jhinti Sasan.

The crime branch team also stumbled on deposits worth Rs 10 lakh, which had been stashed away in four bank accounts.

The crime branch officials suspect the recovery of more cash and gold ornaments as a steel locker that was found during today's search operation is yet to be opened. A laptop hard disk and a computer have also been recovered.

The investigating agency had earlier detected cash deposits to the tune of Rs 2.4 crore from seven bank accounts belonging to Sura, his two sons and wife. The crime branch had also recovered Rs 25 lakh in cash.

The money was stashed in gunny bags in the denominations of 1,000 and 500 notes from a room behind the ashram's office.

The police, who were earlier investigating the case, had recovered Rs 3.34 lakh in cash and 900 grams of gold jewellery from the daughters-in-law of Mishra.

The police had also recovered fixed deposits worth Rs 22 lakh, 27 LIC bonds and 13 other insurance policies.

Crime branch sources said a team would travel to Mumbai tomorrow to conduct a detailed probe into the investments and existing properties of the self-styled spiritual leader in the financial capital.

The investigating agency had earlier found a diary from the ashram containing the details and contact numbers of five persons, said to be close associates of the self-proclaimed spiritual guru and were suspected of managing the entire empire of Sura baba.

Sources said these associates had the details of every financial transaction, donations and investments made in the past 15 years.

In a related development, the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class today extended the remand period of Sura and his two sons by three days. Though the crime branch had sought an additional five-day remand for the trio for further interrogation, the court only granted a three-day remand. The scene outside the court remained chaotic while the self-styled guru and his two sons were being produced amid tight security.

A few people, who had gathered outside the court, tried to manhandle the self-styled guru.

In yet another development, police commissioner R.P. Sharma today directed the police stations concerned to keep a watch on other religious establishments.

"We have asked concerned police stations to ascertain whether any such establishment is involved in any kind of illegal act," said the police commissioner.

There are 56 such religious establishments in Bhubaneswar and on its outskirts.
