Cuttack: Members of the parents association squatted outside the Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV)- 2 here for four hours on Monday demanding handing over of land immediately for the school's permanent building.
Later, they submitted to the principal a memorandum addressed to the governor through the Cuttack collector.
"We have demanded immediate handover of the proposed earmarked land at Nuapada Mouza after development to Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, New Delhi, for construction of the school's permanent building," said Sriharsa Khuntia, president of Parents Association of Kendriya Vidyalaya - 2 (Cuttack).
The school had as started KV-II from a temporary asbestos-roofed accommodation provided by the district administration on the premises of the Government Press at Nuapada-Madhupatna with Classes I to V with 40 students in each since 2010. The school now has classes I through X with a total of 550 students.
"We have also demanded provision of five more classrooms for starting classes XI and XII (science)," the association general secretary Anil Kumar Samal said.
According to the understanding, the district administration was to provide temporary accommodation till allotment of land for the school.
According to the memorandum, the state government had earmarked eight acres for construction of a permanent building of the school at Nuapada Mouza in 2011.
After verification of the earmarked land, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan's committee had found it suitable for construction of school building, staff quarters and other facilities. However, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan had expected it to be handed over after the land was filled up because it is low-lying and had around 3-foot stagnant water on it.
"The earmarked land is still in the same low lying condition till date. Though Cuttack Municipal Corporation showed some interest in 2015 to fill up the land by dumping debris and levelling the ground, nothing has followed," the association said in the memorandum.
Taking note of the high demand reflecting the need for more Kendriya Vidyalayas in Cuttack, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan's board of governors had recommended two schools in Cuttack as part of the process initiated by the human resources development ministry for expanding the network of such central schools. Consequently, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan had in July 2010 notified for Cuttack one school for the area in and around Khannagar in the southeastern part of the city and a second one on the CISF campus in Mundali on the northwestern fringe of the city.
