Cuttack: The condition of the Kunduli "gang-rape" victim, who was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital here, is said to be "critical".
Hospital superintendent Shyama Kanungo said an 11-member medical board of specialists from different departments was formed for her treatment.
"Her condition is critical. She is under observation in ICU (intensive care unit)," Dr Kanungo said.
It is suspected that the girl had an overdose of iron tablets, sources said. The girl vomited in the afternoon at Kotpad, where she was accommodated by the District Child Welfare Committee. There was blood in her vomit and she was rushed to the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Jeypore. When her condition worsened, she was shifted to the SCB hospital on Sunday.
"We received her around 3.30pm on Sunday. She was immediately admitted to the cardiology ICU because her condition was critical. She was shifted to the medicine department ICU around 5pm on Monday," said Dr Sri Prasad Mohanty, convenor of the board of doctors.
"We were told that she had taken seven to eight iron tablets and this is why there was blood in her vomit. But the exact cause of blood vomiting is being assessed with the help of gastroenterologists and haematologists," said Dr Mohanty, an associate professor at the medicine department. "We are also looking into the cause of recurring loss of consciousness," he added.
The board, with the head of department of medicine as chairman, also includes specialists from cardiology, medicine, anaesthesiology, forensic medicine & toxicology, neurology, psychiatry, gyanaecology, gastroenterology, nephrology and clinical haematology.
The Class-IX student of Kunduli in Koraput district was allegedly gang-raped by a group of security personnel on October 10.
Police, however, had disputed her claim. The police registered a case under sections 376 (D) and 377 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Finally, around three weeks after the alleged assault, the investigating police, on the basis of the doctors' report, said that she had not been raped.
