Bhubaneswar, Aug. 9: Kamalamma, mother of Maoist leader Dunna Keshab Rao alias Azad, was today denied a meeting with her son who is on a hunger strike at the Jharapada special jail here since August 4.

Sources said that Kamalamma, who came to the jail along with some relatives, was not allowed to enter the jail premises.

Frustrated, she went back and submitted a memorandum to the governor demanding, among other things, release of Azad who was arrested by Odisha police last year following his surrender in Andhra Pradesh.

“I want my son to be released from jail and be rehabilitated according to the policy of the government,” said Kamalamma.

Jail authorities, however, denied the allegation.

Azad, who has been in Jharapada special jail since June last year, is on a hunger strike protesting against his arrest and demanding his release.

The Maoist, who till his surrender in Andhra Pradesh headed the Vanshadhara division, had also sat on a hunger strike in March this year. Her mother had also come to meet him then. But, the jail authorities did not allow the meeting citing security reasons.

However, Jharapada special jail authorities said they were not aware that Kamalamma was coming to meet Azad today. “I do not know whether she came today or not, as none had approached us. Despite our several attempts to persuade Azad to end his strike, he continues with it. But his health condition is good and jail doctors are attending to him,” said superintendent of Jharapada jail Birabara Nayak.
